The Institute of Geriatrics of Japan Medical University was the first research unit to develop the effect of hydrogen treatment on diseases. The director, Professor Naruo Ota, up the research of electrolyzed water for several years, and finally decided to study this phenomenon. This is a team dedicated to the study of biochemistry and cell mitochondrial physiology. They hope to analyze the nature of this magical water effect. Ota has studied the function of mitochondria for more than 30 years. More and more studies have found that the relationship between aging and many chronic diseases is becoming clearer because of the damaging effect of active oxygen toxicity on mitochondrial function. Professor Ota is also gradually paying attention to this issue.

In 2002, Mr. Wataru Murota, president of Blue Mercury, a Japanese hydrogen water manufacturing company, began to develop hydrogen-rich water. At the same time and thereafter, many Japanese companies began to develop and produce hydrogen-rich water. Many people have improved their bodies by drinking hydrogen water to varying degrees. However, due to the lack of research evidence, the scientific nature of this water has been questioned inside and outside the academic community, and even considered to be a deception.

In January 2005, Professor Naruo Ota began to experiment with hydrogen-rich water. As a standard procedure of biochemistry, cells are generally used for effect screening, and then organ effects and overall effects are performed. The earliest 3-day cytology study found that the medium supplemented with hydrogen has a significant effect on resisting oxidative damage. After knowing this result, President Murata said excitedly: "I was called a liar yesterday, and I will never be called a liar again today. I am really grateful." Half a year later (June 2005), Professor Naruo Ota began to use hydrogen-rich water to conduct animal disease model experiments such as stroke, myocardial infarction and liver ischemia. Professor Ota mainly considered the huge clinical application prospects of hydrogen in the future, and the research of disease model is to carry out clinical trials and application efforts in the future. In order to promote hydrogen medical research, Blue Mercury and other companies actively funded the establishment of the Hydrogen Molecular Medicine Research Center in (2008) in the Institute of Geriatrics of Japan Medical University (Figure 0.1). Early research reports from Japan used most of the saturated Hydrogen water is directly provided by these companies.
